Introduction:  We are an impatient bunch here on this planet.  We creatures want things when we want things and when things don’t come in the time we believe they should, we often take matters into our own hands.

That is the original sin by the way.  It was and still is the same sin that takes us now to places where God does not want us to go.  I used to hear others say, “That person has the patience of Job.”  As I get older, now close to 70 years here, the truth becomes clearer every day that trusting God means more than realizing where things come from.  Faith means that when I don’t receive what I think is supposed to come when I believe it should, even then trusting in God’s judgement and not mine is the key to contentment.  Otherwise I will be disappointed.

Proverbs 3:5-6,  “5iTrust in the Lord with all thine heart; And jlean not unto thine own understanding. 6 In all thy ways kacknowledge him,  And lhe shall direct thy paths.” [2]

We are led to believe that we must go around doing good deeds and everything will be OK.  Truth is; we can do no good unless we trust Him.  When we leave our understanding behind and wait for His truth to be revealed in all things, there will be no need to riot over what we believe is an injustice.  Most people will believe that we are stupid because we don’t take up for ourselves, but that will show that true Christians are truly different.

This period of uncertainty has been very testing for some.  For me it has often become nearly unbearable as I watch folks getting more uneasy about being around even the ones they should fully trust including those who God used to bring them into this world.  Their excuse is, I don’t want to get you sick.  Truth more often is I don’t know what you might have so I can’t trust that I won’t get sick and be unable to function the way I want to.  Finally understanding that God’s speed is the only timing that matters is not giving up.  It is giving Him the rightful place that makes the only sense so that things will not go against you.

Scripture:  The scripture is Acts 2:1.  When you have found it please rise to your feet for the reading of God’s written word.

Prayer: Please be seated

Message:  In the first chapter of Acts, the disciples and others were with Jesus as He was ready for ascension back to heaven.  Jesus told them to go to that certain upper room and wait.  After He had said that, He rose and they watched.  Acts 1:10 “And while they ulooked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, vtwo wmen stood by them in xwhite apparel; 11 Which also said, yYe men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is btaken up from you into heaven, zshall aso come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.” [3]

The list of people there shows not only the eleven apostles but also certain women.  Peter took it upon himself to vote in a replacement for Judas Iscariot.  So that’s the ones who were in the upper room waiting.  We don’t know how long the wait was but there in our focal verse it we know who the “they” are.  They were Jesus’ brethren that followed Him as His disciples and they were those who believed Him when He said to go there and wait.

“And when”; that says it all really.  We wait as He teaches us to have faith that He will do at the precise right time, not before and not too late.  And when He knows what we could not possibly know, then and only then when all things are finally ready and fully filled, then it is the absolute right time.

There is that old debate that it was right for Matthias to be elected by the eleven to replace Judas before the Holy Spirit came.  There is no doubt that God did allow that to happen though Matthias is never mentioned again and we wonder, “what about Paul’s apostleship.”  There is no doubt that God used the Roman empire’s design of roads and other things to set the time for Jesus’ first arrival but God does not depend on us.  We depend on Him.  He chooses to use the things we do in His scheme of things and because of that we should praise and be amazed.

Was there something that God was waiting for those people to do in that time?  Simple answer is yes!  And the answer is found in this same sentence!  When the day of Pentecost was fully come and when they were all with one accord…  Their minds had to be set on His will.  They might have had other agendas like finding a replacement for Judas Iscariot for example.  But once their minds were together waiting for God’s will to be done, then God empowered The Holy Spirit.  He has always been here.  We know that from way back in Genesis 1:2,  "And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters." [4]   That was before we were here or any other form of life.  The Holy Spirit was ready but we were not!  The minds of the believers had to be ready before God The Father allowed The Holy Spirit to have His power over and through us.

The day of Pentecost was finally and fully come.  The hearts of those who believe in Christ was finally and fully ready to receive that which we could have had all the time yet we chose to do our own thing because we were tired of waiting for that which He has that is better than anything we could possibly dream up on our own.

But of course there is always more.  One day Jesus is coming back to gather us up together in that one place where we will physically, emotionally, and spiritually be together.  Genesis 2: 18 “And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone;” [5]  This thing of separation is being called things to make it sound as if it being separate from each other is a right thing to do but it is not right for us to not be together in this place.  No so-called social media or man-made virtual platform will ever take the place of us being together.  Keep in mind that this is coming from a guy whose livelihood was once all about computers.  No man-made thing will ever take the place of being together and when we are finally ready to trust Him and put our faith fully in Him then this too shall pass so that we can be about His business.

Don’t you love what that next verse says?  Verse one started with “and when.”  Verse two, “And suddenly.”  Why hasn’t this thing ended?  How will it end so that God’s normal will be our normal?  Suddenly!  2 “And suddenly there came da sound from heaven eas of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.” [6]  Suddenly it filled all the house where they were sitting!  Together!  Suddenly!

Prayer:

Invitation:  We are here today to commemorate the remembrance of that time before Jesus was placed on the cross.  We are here to partake in Communion.  How can we be worthy to partake in such a meal as they did in that Last Supper?  Only through the shed blood of Jesus!

As we are preparing our hearts for this, let us be mindful of those who are in this world which we have chosen to separate from emotionally and spiritually.  This virus thing is a separation that has more to do with physical things just now.  There is that emotional separation which is much deeper.   Something caused that separation that must be dealt with by each and every believer and we as believers must deal with these things.  Only when you are ready and willing to forgive can you be worthy of what we are about to do now.  Let not your hearts be troubled.

Let us prepare to partake.
