Introduction: Last week we discussed the idea of predestination. We all have a destiny which God chose for us to fulfill. Whether we decide for that path or not is not decided by God. We are allowed to take the path we decide only because God is omniscient or all knowing. We are allowed to take the path we decide because though we are swayed by what happens to us, God the Father is immutable. He is not moved from loving us because of what we do. He is deliberate in His love for us and gives us what we need to accomplish His will when we decide to love Him as He calls us.
The focal verse today begins with the word moreover. It is as if Paul was explaining the difference between mercy and grace. We have mercy in that we do not receive that which we are due because of our sin nature. Moreover, we are conformed into the image of Jesus when we admit our guilt and ask that God brings us back into His will which is repentance.
We are saved from eternal damnation and moreover we are adopted into the family of Jesus. But wait there is more! How can there be more? What could be more wonderful than to be allowed into the family of God as one of the brothers of Jesus. I say brothers because when we get to heaven there will be no division of men and women. We will all be truly equal fully in His love.
There is a time in the life of King David when he had an opportunity to do more. A death occurred in the family. Absolum had killed his half brother Amnon over the rape of Absolum’s sister Tamar. Absolum left in self-exile. Time passed. David’s confidant Joab knew that this separation between father and son would not end well. He asked a woman to intercede, and David sent for Absolum to return. When Absolum finally came back this is what happened. 2 Samuel 14:23 “So Joab arose xand went to Geshur, and brought Absalom to Jerusalem. 24 And the king said, Let him turn to his own house, and let him not see my face. So Absalom returned to his own house, and saw not the king’s face.” [2]
As we continue with this account, we learn that it ended horribly for David and Absolum. As tensions continued to increase, their relationship of father and son worsened . What would have happened if David had been as gracious as God has been with us?
When the deacons pulled the pastor out of the water last Sunday, we were given a fresh start. We have been given a new beginning. We are given a new beginning each day to decide what we will do from now until God decides enough is enough. Merry Oaks has been given a new opportunity to show the love of God in this community. It happens every morning. What are we going to do with our new day?
In Revelation 21:5 God told John to write it down “5 And ohe that sat upon the throne said, Behold, pI make all things new. And he said unto me, qWrite: for rthese words are true and faithful.” [3]
Scripture: The scripture for this message is Romans 8:30-31. Please Stand Under the reading of God’s word.
Prayer: Please be seated.
Message: All things work together for good to them who love God, to them who are called by Him. This is the theme and today is the “moreover” statement. The Old Testament tells of the creation and fall of mankind. We were given rules of how to get back into God’s will by following certain laws which we as fallen humans could not keep. Jesus was there in heaven at the creation, and we were created to be perfect human beings as Jesus would show later in His human form.
None of us could come up to His measure. There had to be a perfect sacrifice. Jesus was our pattern for righteousness and Jesus became the perfect sacrifice to pay for our sin. He proclaimed that it was finished. The sacrificial system was finished. The separation between God The Father and mankind was finished for all who would accept the sacrifice of Jesus. Now all things work together for God’s purpose to those who love God and hear the call for God’s purpose and respond to that call.
There is a door in the front of this church where people enter. When we come in, we are here to be changed into someone who can be used for God’s purpose. Each time we come in it is that new beginning. When we exit the building, we are not the same as when we came in. We reenter the world equipped for showing love to the lost.
How can we do that? We can’t! God instills that into us when we allow His Holy Spirit to come into us. God is omnipotent or all powerful. There is no power in the universe without God. He formed it all because before there was anything, He was already God.
The text says whom He predestined. Did God predestinate some and not others? Why? Because God is also omniscient. Additional to the fact that God is all powerful, God is all knowing. He knew your thoughts and your decisions when He formed you. For those who would love Him and accept His call, He destined before we came into this world because He is God.
George W. Bush was severely criticized by the press when he said that he was destined to be the President of the United States. The press has no idea what Romans chapter eight is explaining because most of them believe that each man creates his own destiny. George W could have refused, but when you find out where you are, it is only because God allowed it to happen. I am joyful that God put me here. I am grateful that God put us here together for such a time as this.
I don’t know how you feel because I am not God. I can only answer for me. For all the years that God allowed me to think about what I wanted to think about, I did just that and only that. He gave me special things which I misused for my benefit but one day God took that greed away. That was the day that He justified me. He forgave the sins and the debts that I had built up while having a good time being myself. That was the day that He bought and redeemed me.
That is the day that Jesus became my friend. He befriended me! Jesus is the glory of God and He chose to share His glory with me the day He befriended me. He did the same thing for you. Do you see that? “And whom He justified, them He also glorified.” Paul didn’t say me, referring only to himself, Paul said them God glorified. Do you feel His glory? You can. If you only follow you, it won’t happen. Follow Jesus! Let Him befriend you.
As a Christian you have the power of The Holy Spirit within you. As a Chrisitan you no longer need to be moved by powers of darkness. As a Christian, your faith, though it be as small as a mustard seed can move mountains. As a Christian you share in Jesus’ justification and glory. As a Chrisian you can show the world love instead of insisting that the world shows you anything that is against His will. As a Christian you have a fortification within you that the world cannot break through.
What indeed shall we say about these things? When we accepted Jesus, we were brought into the family of God. We are fortified against all that this world can throw at us if we understand that it is God alone that bolstered our power to resist evil. We cannot resist evil by our own power. We are defenseless to resist even our own anger at times. When our anger takes over, we fail.
If we let go of ourselves and let God take us where He will, we can go through whatever this world throws up at us. He has the defense against any offence others might think they possess. Follow as we continue reading verses thirty-two through thirty-four.
32 "He that aspared not his own Son, but bdelivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also cfreely give us dall things? 33 Who shall elay any thing to the charge of fGod’s elect? gIt is God that justifieth. 34 ghWho is he that condemneth? It is Christ that bidied, yea rather, that is risen again, jwho is even at the right hand of God, who also kmaketh intercession for us." [4]
Jesus is right there right now sitting at the right hand of God The Father where Jesus was before He gave up heaven for us. He is right there right now praying prayers of intercession for you, for me. Who in the world can bring anything against us? Nobody and nothing in this world! Who did God do this for? For us!
Prayer:
Invitation: Paul felt the fear that the world puts upon the Christian. We all feel it from time to time. God allows the pressures of life to nearly overwhelm us. Then someone comes along to remind us of what we already know. We are conquerors because He has already conquered death and the devil for us. For us!
Sometimes we all wonder but there is that voice that brings us back. “35Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall mtribulation, or mdistress, or mmpersecution, or famine, or nnakedness, or peril, or sword?” [5]
Paul went on to explain his conclusion, “36 As it is written, nnFor thy sake owe are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. 37 Nay, in all these things pwe are more than conquerors through qhim that loved us. 38 For I am persuaded, that neither ldeath, nor life, nor rangels, nor sprincipalities, nor stpowers, nor things uwpresent, nor things uto come, 39 Nor xheight, nor xdepth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from ythe love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord." [6]
Today Merry Oaks has a new beginning. We are preparing for a time of revival when others will come to share God’s word. There will be some who come to our homecoming whom we have not seen in a while and yes, we will eat. The meeting will last just a few days, but the change could take us to a new place that will last through many generations. I pray that we will stand under the majesty of God and let Him do what He predestined us to be. Let us sing as we come to His throne of grace.
