What IT Is

Luke 11:9,  “And I say unto you, fAsk, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.” [1]

Introduction:  Today’s text brings questions to my mind when I hear it or read it.  What is it that I am to request that will be given to me?  If I am supposed to go and seek something, if I am to make an inquest for something, what is it?  If I am to knock on the door which one is it?  If God has something there to bequest to me what is it?

This seems like another if, then, else statement in a computer logic program.  If you ask then you shall receive.  What if you don’t ask?  That is the else part.  If you don’t ask then you won’t receive.  If you don’t make an inquest for the desired thing you will never find it.  If you don’t get God’s attention by knocking on the right door you won’t find your bequest.  There is an inheritance out there which God wants to give you but you must find the right place or you will miss out.  What is it?  Where is it?

A couple of weeks ago we discussed how people process the things differently that we hear and see.  We understand things differently.  When we heard, “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country” it had different meanings for us two Brady boys.  Kennedy challenged me to figure what I could do to help others.  John F. Kennedy was not my brother’s favorite person.  My brother Jack was old enough to vote for Kennedy.  I wasn’t.  Jack took it to mean that he might have to go into the armed services and fight for something that he didn’t understand.  We do process things differently.

As I think about Kennedy’s words, now I know that what he said goes beyond a country.  We should be loyal to the nation that God gave us.  We should protect the values that this nation was founded on.  I have not changed my stance on that.  We are to remind others when we are asked.

Without loyalty to where God places us we have chaos.  Paul finally learned that he could withstand anything placed in front of him because of the faith that he had in God.  It took many hard experiences but Paul finally found contentment where he was.  We must trust God to find that contentment or we will always be bitter pills for others to swallow.

What is IT?  Where is IT?  Which door should I knock on that He will open when I knock?  These are the questions that we will consider today.

Scripture:  Today’s focal text is Luke 11:9.  Please stand for the reading of God’s word.

Prayer:  Let us pray.  Amen.  Please be seated.

Message:  Traditionally we are past the period of time when Jesus tarried as He walked this earth in His glorified body.  Ascension Day this year was marked as Thursday May 18, 2023.  Last Sunday was Pentecost Sunday.  Last Monday was Memorial Day.

Pentecost Sunday is the day that a great promise was fulfilled.  Jesus told the disciples in John 14, “15 aIf ye love me, keep my commandments. 16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another bComforter, that he may abide with you for ever; 17 Even cthe Spirit of truth; dwhom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: ebut ye know him; for fhe dwelleth with you, and gshall be in you.” [2]

The Holy Spirit gives us gifts that are different from the talents that God already gave us before we accepted Jesus as Lord.  The greatest of these gifts is love.  Faith is a Spiritual gift.  We once trusted in the wrong things and we were led astray by things designed to take us in wrong directions.  Hope is another Spiritual gift that allows us to realize what we will have one day even though it has not become physically real yet.  We have hope because we have faith in God.  That hope is for Jesus to return.  We know He will and then He will take us home.  We have that hope which we count on.

Follow as we hear the words of Jesus as He leads to the promise we are considering today.  Luke 11: “5 And he said unto them, Which of you shall have a friend, and shall go unto him cat midnight, and say unto him, Friend, lend me three loaves; 6 For a friend of mine ||in his journey is come to me, and I have nothing dto set before him? 7 And he from within shall answer and say, Trouble me not: the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give thee. 8 I say unto you, eThough he will not rise and give him, because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will rise and give him as many as he needeth. 9 And I say unto you, fAsk, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. 10 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.” [3]

What are we to do with what we have been gifted?  Are we to keep it to ourselves and hoard up God’s gifts?  Is that what Jesus does?  As we look back to what we heard in John 14 we understand that Jesus also asked God The Father for things.  Jesus asked His Father for things for us.  Jesus has always had the Holy Spirit.  He did not request for The Holy Spirit for Himself but for us.

When we ask and make our request to God for the right reason He will always answer yes.  When we ask and make our request to God for reasons that are not in His will He will answer then too.  His answer then will be no.  The word there is given; not credited like wages earned.  He gives!  What He gives doesn’t depend on what we have done for Him.  He gives!  We receive.  It is that simple.  If we believe that we can be good and do good and receive a reward or be credited for something, we are deceiving ourselves.  We are misguided and incorrect.  He gives when we ask correctly.  What is it that we should ask for?  What did Jesus ask for us?

Is it a simple request that He will always answer right away?  That sure would be easy wouldn’t it?  Jesus Christ is God.  When He came to earth He came in Human form.  Jesus was fully man.  He had to learn to eat, walk, and speak.  Jesus had to learn a trade to receive the physical things he needed while He was here.  It took 33 ½ years for Jesus to finally get back to where He started.  It was not a simple request.  He had to go through difficult things.  He was asked many questions Himself.  It was an inquest for Jesus as he sought to find His way.  An inquest is a quest.  It is a search that does not end quickly.  You go through trials and tests and then when you are ready to receive you finally understand what to do with that which you have found.  You must be willing to follow His will until He sees that you are ready to find the prize.  That is your choice.

Jesus started out with a verbal request; ask.  Next Jesus said that we must not sit and wait but we must journey and look for the answer as we go; seek.  Now Jesus sees us at the door where we have been led to.  Is the door going to open because we have arrived?  NO!

Knock and it shall be opened to you.  The thing that is rightfully for you is ready for you to have.  It is a bequest which means that you have done nothing to gain it but it is yours when His time comes for you to have it opened for you.  He opens it for you when you are persistent and ready to use it.  So what is it?

Last Sunday was Pentecost Sunday.  The IT is not an it after all.  We speak of the Holy Spirit as an IT but He is the third person of the Godhead.  We will not receive peace or joy or Spiritual comfort until we receive Him.  We ask for so many things that will bring us what we believe will make us happy in our earthly life.  We seek to climb up beyond where we are so that we can look down on where we were before.  We beat and we knock and we push and we shove until we believe that we will overcome those who have what we want.  What good is that when we are in eternity with God?

What we need is God in us.  We need the Holy Spirit so that we can experience all that God has for us.  Without Him we are nothing.

Prayer:  Let us pray…

Invitation:  There is an evident change in us when we have The Holy Spirit.  We have a different attitude towards what is truly important.  Yes we pray for physical healing and happiness and physical comfort while we are here in the place.  We pray for happiness.  The preamble to the U.S. Constitution says this, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

Happiness is not a destination.  The founding fathers knew that.  We have the right to pursue happiness.  It is a quest that never ends.  Joy on the other hand is the destination.  We arrive joyful when we have received God.  If you are still asking and seeking and knocking, today might be the day that God opens the door.  Have you received IT?  The Holy Spirit is ready when you are.  Make your petitions for others that they too will find joy.  Consider and stand as we sing.
