Introduction:   The advent of Jesus is in all four gospel accounts.  Mark is said to be the first one written from Peter’s telling to John Mark yet it comes second in the New Testament.  Matthew is the first of the four accounts and seems to expand on Mark.  Matthew also includes the genealogy of Jesus from the perspective of his earthly father Joseph and it is more written for the understanding of the Jews.  Luke was the physician who accompanied Paul so it is written to be understood by non-Jewish Christians.  The genealogy in Luke is written from Mary’s perspective.  Not using the earthly father’s genealogy to track the heredity of a child which would be frowned on by the Jews but Luke was more written for us non-Jews.

Today we will look at the very first verse of the gospel according to John.  If I had been in the counsel when the books of the New Testament were compiled in their order, I would have probably but John’s gospel first.  The Old Testament begins with the same words as John’s.

When someone decides that a written source on any subject can be trusted, there used to be a saying about that book.  For those who know anything about automobile repair, the Chilton’s manual used to be the “Bible” of car repair.  People who wanted to know the how to of anything about their car would go to the parts store and buy a Chilton’s manual for their particular model of car and they would follow the instructions.  Now everybody puts a U-Tube thing out there.

I wouldn’t have dared to change the order of a Chilton’s manual because I counted on what someone else told me.  Today the Bible is being discounted because people don’t know who to trust.  For them the Bible is whoever tells them what they want to hear.

The message today could have been entitled “Consider The Source.”  There is only one source to matter and He is God.  He has no beginning and He has no end.  He can be trusted because everything came from Him and He loves that which He made.  The only thing which He said that was not good was for us to be alone.  Now people are telling us to be alone.  In the beginning it was not good then and it is not good now.  We will never be alone because He will never leave us or forsake us.  He gave us His Word with a capital W.

Scripture:  Today’s scripture is John 1:1.  When you have found it please rise to your feet for the reading of God’s written word.

Prayer: Please be seated

Message:  Those who don’t believe the Bible as the source for truth have one thing in common with us who do believe.  Everything here where we live now had a beginning.  Some say that it was a big bang with no probable explanation except a calamity happened somehow for no apparent reason,  To those folks the big bang was the beginning,

So who made the stuff that caused the big bang?  Who lit the fuse?  The things against the Bible truth cause more questions than can be answered because nothing else makes sense to those who have been indwelled with the Holy Spirit.  It is good that we at least can agree that there was a beginning.

Moses said that there was a beginning in Genesis.  That word genesis actually is translated as beginning.  In the beginning God…  John began his gospel explaining that the Word was also in the beginning.  That means that the Word was already somewhere before there was a beginning.  The Word has always been because The Word has no beginning, The Word was already always.

What is it that had a beginning?  In Genesis we understand that creation had a beginning.  Before there was an earth or the moon or the countless number of stars that are the center of each of their planetary systems The Word was already.  Not only that, but The Word was in the beginning.  The Word was involved in the beginning.  Notice that the Bible does not just say that The Word was there when the beginning happened.  The Word was in the beginning!

“And The Word was with God…”  Going back to Genesis 1:1 we see “In the beginning God…”  God was already always in the beginning and now according to John’s gospel so was The Word.  John says that The Word was with God, beside God in the beginning.  The Word was alongside God.  Could it be that there were others in the personhood of God in the creation?  In the Genesis account we see that the Spirit of God of God was also there.  “And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.” [2]  Wherever God was in the beginning and whatever or whoever was counted to be with God, The Word was more than just along for the ride, The Word was among those in the presence of God.  The Word was with God.

It’s one thing to be in the audience of a concert and to be there when the music happens.  It’s altogether a different thing to be one of the performers being a part of the show.  The word was not a bystander.  The Word was with God!

Now in the third part after that second comma of this short verse John ties up the binder for us.  The word was there in the beginning and The Word was not only standing there watching as a bystander.  The word was with God!  But that is still not saying enough!  The word was God!

What was The Word doing before the beginning?  The word was being God!  He was God in person and likeness.  The Word and God The Father were alike.  In Genesis 1:26 we find this truth even in human creation, “And God said, kLet us make man in our image, lafter our likeness:” [3]  So who do you think God The Father was talking to then?  It’s doubtful if He was talking to Himself.  Those whom God The Father were speaking to when He made us were alike.  He said that we should be made in their likeness.  Notice that God The Father did not say in “My” likeness but “Our” likeness.

2 The same was in the beginning with God.” [4]  Verse two reiterates what John stated at the beginning of verse one.  The same was in the beginning.  This Word, this same “Him” was already.  Moses didn’t know what to call this One who communicated to him all that he was to say to the Israelites and Egyptians.  Look back to Exodus 3:”13 And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them? 14 And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, tI AM hath sent me unto you.” [5]

Follow as we read John 1:1-5, “1 aIn the beginning was bthe Word, and the Word was cwith God, and the Word dwas God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 eAll things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 fIn him was life; and gthe life was the light of men. 5 And hthe light shineth in hdarkness; and the darkness icomprehended it not.” [6]

We communicate with words.  So does God.  Jesus is the great communicator.  When we decided to alienate ourselves from the One who created us, God The Father sent His Word.

Prayer:

Invitation:  God gives us do-overs.  Aren’t you glad that He does?  2020 was a tough year for us.  We all have stories of things that happened which when we were faced with some of them we would have no doubt prayed to bypass those things.

We all had them and we are still here!  What? Why?  How? Who?  Each and every moment of each and every day we have a restart.  2021 will not be a do-over of 2020.  If it is then we have not overcome the obstacles which God allowed us to go over in 2020.  Things will be different.

Things will also be the same though.  We still have the Great Communicator which was there in the beginning.  He is still bringing us His promise that will take us beyond where we are right now and right here.  There is nothing that we have been through that Jesus was not with us.

As we are now in another year of Our Lord, let us remember what A.D. stands for.  Wikipedia says, “The term anno Domini is Medieval Latin and means "in the year of the Lord" ...”  Let us enter this new year of the Lord knowing that He is was and always will be with us.
